Losing weight is an ongoing journey that takes time, effort and a lot of patience. Who doesn’t like to cuddle up inside with a cup of tea, eat comfort foods and binge watch your favourite show on a cold winters day? Research has shown that our average calorie intake decreases about 200 calories per day in the summer compared to the winter. But why is it easier to lose weight in the summer than it is in the winter? Let’s find out.
Longer Days
In the summer days are longer which tends to make people more active during the day and for longer periods of time. Whereas, the coldness of the winter can leave you feeling lazy and unmotivated. Make use of the warm weather and go for a walk in the evening or find a sport that you find enjoyable. I am currently finding tennis very fun as it keeps me on my toes and even if you aren’t very good you will still work up a sweat running after the ball!
Fresher Foods
Cooler temperatures lead to hot food cravings, hot drinks and comfort foods that are generally higher in calories. In the summer, you crave fresher foods that make you feel light and refreshed. You might find yourself leaning towards a colourful nutritious smoothie rather than your usual coffee order. Try out our freshly prepared meals delivered straight to your door today and start to notice a difference in your weight loss journey. Whatever your dietary requirements, there will be a meal plan waiting for you here.
Vitamin D
Sunlight increases exposure to Vitamin D which lowers cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol levels are responsible for immunity and energy levels. More energy improves stamina which means you can jog for a little while longer, get a few more steps in or play football for the full 90 minutes!
Metabolic Rate
Your overall metabolic rate increases in the summer because of the heat. The amount of kinetic energy that is available to cells increases. A higher metabolism helps to burn more calories as well as improving digestion. The sweat glands are more active in the heat and sweating out enough liquid will cause to lose water weight.
Water
We naturally drink more water in the summer due to the heat. Drinking more water can lead to the feeling of satiety and consuming less food. Consuming more water can help you lose weight as it suppresses your appetite, boosts your metabolism and can make exercising more efficient and easier.
Seize the summer and begin or continue your weight loss journey as it is easier to lose weight in the summer! If you struggle to stick to your diet during the summer time, be sure to have a look at our fresh meal plans here.
